I saw a new reader comment for THE SHORE on Amazon the other day.

“The writer is really good. At times it was a little over my head and I would have to go back and reread a page.”

I thought this was sweet. She wasn’t outraged that the book proved a little difficult for her. She didn’t rail against the fact that it existed. She really made an effort to read at an adult level and was rewarded.

Harsh contrasts are easy to find. Last month, 47North ran a sale on THE PINES, and the book found its way into the hands of people who appear to have been expecting Jersey Devil Wars. You can imagine how they reacted at finding themselves with an actual novel: a whole new crop of one-star reviews in all their misspelled and ungrammatical glory. One of them actually complains about all “the big words.”

Big words? Seriously? I think I feel some short ones coming on.

I liked all the words in The Pines. Even the short ones, even the long ones, and even the bad ones.
