This is kinda cool -- I'm following in the footsteps of my pal Weston Ochse, who recorded a short story for Tucson's NPR station around Halloween. They asked me for a story, which I recently penned with this purpose in mind. It's a dark holiday tale called "Long Road Home." I'll be recording it this coming Friday at their studios, and they'll be inserting sound effects. It'll air on their holiday show, Dec. 23/24. When I know specific times, I'll post 'em, and I'll also post a link when it's available online. Since I wrote the story specifically for them, I want that to be the first appearance of it, but right around the broadcast I hope to also have a low-cost (very low cost, since it's very short) e-version available online. Also, after 46 published novels, one--supernatural thriller Cold Black Hearts, has finally been released as an unabridged audiobook. Previously I'd had one adapted as a kind of audio drama, primarily for the truck driver demographic, but this one is for anybody who can download mp3 files. It's read by actress Tamara McDaniel, with some original theme music and production by Scott Haskin. They did a great job with it. With the e-book revolution at hand, I have work people can listen to! Right on the cusp of change! |

I have a hard time believing that you could suck at reading out loud. If you talk like you write, it's a slam dunk. |

I think the recording session went pretty well (though I haven't heard it yet). I read straight through it once, while to producers and the audio guy listened and made notes. Then we went through it more slowly, stopping to discuss different aspects of it, take suggestions from the producers, or when I asked to retake something. By the end, I think we got a pretty solid reading down. Now they're adding music and sound effects. I'm really curious to hear the final product (even though I'm one of those people who cringes when I hear my own voice recorded). It'll air next Friday and Saturday in Tucson, and will be online sometime around then. I'll post a link when it's up. |
