Post subject:  How Does One Find Out Where to Submit Writing?

First off, my apologies if this needs to be moved to the "Writer's Den" forum, but that one seems to get little traffic so I thought I'd post this here in hopes of getting a better response. Please move if necessary.

I'm relatively new to writing. I was lucky enough to have my first submission accepted for publication in Eulogies II (thanks again!), but since then I've gotten rejections. This is no big deal, I know. I just have to keep working on it and keep submitting.

My question, for the more experienced writers and those with multiple story publications, is this: Where do you find places to submit your work to?

I know there are some paid services, like Duotrope, but I'm kinda broke and it would be wise for me to resist subscribing there. Recently I've been using the Submission Grinder (free), with limited results. It seems to me like there should probably be a lot more publishers out there accepting submissions at any given time (compared to what shows up on the Grinder). Anthologies are always coming out and I'm like "well dammit I didn't even hear about that, wish I would've submitted."

Do you all just dig around on publishers' websites looking for open submission periods? Do you rely on paid services like Duotrope? Is it a matter of being experienced and having built a network of connections in the industry that give you the heads up when submission opportunities arise? I'm naïve to how this works. I'm thinking I need to just pony up for a subscription service but thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

Thank you all in advance for any help/advice you could give me.

Another Eulogies II contributor, Abra Staffin-Wiebe has a good site.

Horror Tree is pretty good and they have a Twitter feed that is really helpful.

If you are on Facebook, go to Open Call: Horror Markets
https://www.facebook.com/groups/384615034930975/

It's one of the best places I've found.

Holy cow those are three really helpful links that I previously had no freakin' clue about. Thank you! I can't wait to dig around on these and start submitting more.

Also, a bit more long-winded - check the websites of various publishers and look for their submission guidelines. Some are totally closed unless there's an agent involved. Some open windows every now and then, and some (Tor?) are always open.

Thanks, Janet. That's one thing I have been doing. I've submitted to Tor and a few others that way.

I've already found a couple good opportunities through Horror Tree and the Facebook group, so thanks again guys!
