Just a few short months ago, I finished two novels that I thought would easily battle it out for my favorite books of 2014, even though it was still early in the year. Those books were NOS4A2 by Joe Hill and Dr. Sleep by Stephen King. And then I read Under the Dome, and was blown away. I've enjoyed King's recent work a lot more than some people - it almost seems like it's "cool" to bash his novels since Cell - but this novel reminded me of when I read books like The Stand, Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary, etc. and just completely immersing myself in his world. And for a 1,000+ page novel - or in my case, two separate paperback books, both over 600 pages - the action never relents. I found myself constantly reading far later than I should have, saying, "I can't possibly stop here, I have to see what happens next!" I will say this, though - it is not a happy story. I think the town's population goes from ~2,000 down to ~30 in just the one week the story takes place in. And many of those deaths are characters I came to like and cheer for. I've already made this mistake once this year, but I'm doing it again - I can't imagine reading a book this year that will top Under the Dome as my favorite book of 2014. My "Halfway Through 2014" favorites... 1. Under the Dome by Stephen King 2. NOS4A2 by Joe Hill 3. Dr. Sleep by Stephen King |

I also liked your first and third entries. Haven't read Hill's book. |

I really liked Duma Key. Could not get into Lissy's (sp?) Story. I have Mr. Mercedes here which I may start next. Loved NOS4A2 and Dr. Sleep. My favorite King is 11/22/64. I've actually been reading older 70's and 80's horror lately. Just finished The Fog and really enjoyed it. |

I enjoyed Mr. Mercedes. The plot is fairly standard crime fiction stuff, but King's writing and characters elevate it above the genre. I'm looking forward to the sequel. |

Loved Duma Key and Dr. Sleep. I've had 11/22/64 on the pile for an age, must get into that. Mr. Mercedes is on there, too. Still haven't read Under the Dome, either, although I did watch the first season of the tv show. |

Janet - There is very little in common with the book except for characters and the dome. The television writers took it in a totally weird direction but this season looks like it might be better than last season |

Hey, other Craig! UTD is one of my favorite books, and probably the best book I read last year. Here's the review I wrote after I was done. As you'll be able to tell, I share your enthusiasm for it. ![]() |
