This novel is a satire about a wedding that takes place in 1977. I wrote it in 1973 and submitted it one time at 453 typed pages to GP Putnam after I looked up the CEO of Putnam and wrote him a letter saying I wanted someone to read this novel. The guy actuallly called me and wanted to know how I got his name and address. It was easy. I had gone to the library and looked him up in a book listing corporate CEO people. He told me to send it to Putnam and he would make sure someone read it. That didn't work out. I didn't hear nothing for almost a year. I called them, and they found the manuscript box in a corner of the mailroom. The box came back to me squashed flat with tire marks on it. No letter or anything. The first rejection I ever received. Someone actually ran over it. I thought, man, they really hated the book. I don't know what happen, but I'm here to claim that is why Putnam is no longer in business. Running over my manuscript put a curse on them. Ha. I put it in another box and shelved it for 40 years. Got it out finally, looked at it, then scanned it, and spent six months changing a few things and about a million scanner mistakes due to the typewriter ribbon print being too light. And now it's out there: the 40 year old novel that was only rejected once. It's crazy as hell. See more about it below. (I chose not to mention on my blog about the strange rejection because only other writers would appreciate the tale of rejection, but it's true, and just one of the many strange rejections I've had over the years.) |
