I remember you said you had finished The Night Country by Stewart O'Nan. How was it? I had to hide mine away because it looked like the kind of book that oozed autumn, and I love reading books like that come October. I'm always curious to hear your thoughts. I remember someone posting here once saying that they had someone tell them that short stories were usually written by authors to impress other authors (or words to that effect), I kept thinking of that while reading this novel, that this book was written to impress other writers. Give yourself a lot of time to read this novel, you'll need it. Its not that the story is complicated, its about the ghosts of a bunch of teenagers that are forced to hang around after their violent and deadly car crash until there is a closure of some kind, its just that the mood of the story is so oppresive it just weighs you down as your reading it. Every action is studied minutely and feels intrusive, no minor detail is overlooked no matter how small. At times it's seemly overly redundant, characters think the same morbid thoughts over and over again with the only variable being the settings. Nothing much happens, excitment wise anyway, until the end of the story, and even then you know whats going to happen. You could say its atmospheric, but so is sitting on top of a dumpster in the parking lot of an old folks home. Give me Tom Piccirilli and Gary Braunbeck any time for this type of fiction. I will try Prayer For The Dying to give this author another chance. TT |

When I was reading FAITHFUL, I ended up skipping the sections O'Nan had written and only reading the King portions. He actually made the 2004 Red Sox season seem boring. He rambles on and on... the minutia kills you. |

Well, there's not much rambling that goes on in A PRAYER FOR THE DYING, since the book clocks in as a novella. Very short, sharp, and gutwrenching read. So says me anyway. |
