This is a question for Wrath, and it might sound really stupid, but I've always been interested about how collaborations between authors work. Do you both write certain parts, or do it together, do you actually sit down together and write, or do it over the net? Sorry for so many questions, lol.....but I'd love to know how you do it

I think I've only read one (well two) collaberations-- Stephen King/Peter Straub with Talisman and Black House. So, I'm curious as well. How does this work? |

I've heard it done at least two different ways. I know that Lee and Ketchum have done collaborations in which one of them wrote most of the story and then the other rewrote it and edited it or just wrote the ending. That's not really my thing. In the collaborations I've done, I write one or two or three thousand words and then my partner will write a couple thousand words, and we just keep passing it back and forth until we're done. In between we'll sometimes discuss storyline and any bizarre plot twists we're thinking of, but not always. When I did Poisoning Eros with Monica we just agreed on the ending and then wrote what ever the hell we wanted to for the most part on our way to the agreed upon climax. In two of my current collaborations we have not even agreed upon an ending yet. All we have is the characters and conflict and we're just running with it. When I collaborated with Lee it was much the same way. We didn't agree upon an ending until we were almost to the climax. It depends on the comfort level I have with my collaborator. I also encourage whomever I am writing with to change whatever I have written if they need to, to make it fit with whatever they are adding. I am usually not a fan of strict formats where this is concerned. I will sometimes plop two or three thousand words right in the center of what my writing partner has written or at the beginning if I think it needs more backstory or if I just want to introduce a new character or do some more with the scene he or she has written. I like to keep it flexible. When I collaborated with Lee I imitated his style a lot to make it blend better. I hate it when you can tell which writer wrote what part in a collaboration. A good friend of Lee and I who has edited both of our work on numerous occassions could not even tell which one of us had written what. I consider that a success. |
