Roses of Blood on Barbwire Vines a vampire / zombie novel by D.L. Snell
Coming mid '07!

About the Book: As zombies invade a barricaded apartment building, the vampire denizens must protect their human livestock. Shade, the vampire monarch, defends her late father's kingdom, but Frost, Shade's general, convinces his brethren to migrate to an island, where they can breed and hunt humans. In their path stands a legion of corpses, just now evolving into something far more lethal, something with tentacles--and that's just the beginning.

This one sounds like it's going to kick ass.

So what makes these zombies so different?
Several innovations distinguish Roses of Blood zombies from the typical undead, but let's start with the similarities:

If you shoot them in the head, they die (at least at first)
If they bite you, you die and become one of them
They eat human flesh
They are a mix of smart, dumb, fast, and slow
Okay, now for the juicy part--originalities:

A parasite known as the Puppeteer reanimates and controls the host
The Puppeteer harvests stem cells from its prey to heal tissues and generate new ones
The Puppeteer develops tentacles
It can mutate
And that's only the beginning . . .

The main characters
Roses of Blood follows three main characters: one human and two vampires.

Frost: the General of Shade's army. He is claustrophobic and wishes to abandon the apartment building in favor of an island where the vampires can farm and hunt free-range humans. He will do anything to get his way.

Shade: The vampire monarch. She promised her late father she would uphold his kingdom, the apartment building, and she wishes to maintain it rather than migrate to Frost's island. She suspects that one of her soldiers assassinated her father and sabotaged the apartment building's defense to let in zombies.

Ann: The secret blood slave of the maternity doctor, Grace. Ann's sister Ellie is one of the vampires' brain-dead breeders, pregnant with Ann's niece; Ann wishes to protect her, and she is also addicted to the vampire's bite. So when she is separated from her sister and her mistress, she must decide whether to escape or to go back--but first she has to get through some barbwire.

If you haven't downloaded the sample chapters you are missing out.

No Amount of Lead/Limbless Bodies Swaying - A Companion Guide to Roses of Blood by DL Snell

I want to start off by saying if you haven't already downloaded this guide, do it now. It comes to approximately 42 pages in PDF format, which is really a quick read.

As we begin our journey we are first introduced to DL and where he went to school. We find out that he holds a BS degree in Creative Writing and also a one-year certificate in Digital Graphic Design. DL then takes us to a place called the "Dark Room," which is part of the writing resource center. The reader learns that this is where he created Roses of Blood. As we enter we are told that he did his writing on some very outdated computers that were running Windows 98. The room is described as dark and foreboding, which is the perfect setting to write Roses of Blood. As readers we come away knowing a little more about DL and where he comes from.

As we move along, we are told both Richard Matheson and George Romero influenced Roses of Blood. DL tells us that he had heard that Dean Koontz always rewrites each page until he feels its perfect before moving on to the next page. Wanting to try this formula for success, he decided to give this method a try. He informs the reader that it took him 5 drafts and 2 years to complete Roses of Blood. We are even shown an example of his writing attempt and how, after a rewrite, things flowed even better. As a reader I came away with the feeling the author didn't think he would ever finish Roses of Blood. In defense of himself, DL tells us, that if he had to do it all over again he wouldn't change a thing.

Next we come to some great conceptual art pages for the cover and scenes from the book which only makes this reader even more eager to finally have a copy of Roses of Blood in his hand. As a bonus we are treated to a list of Zombie and Vampire books/movies the author likes.

Limbless Bodies Swaying

As I started to read this I could see the poetic style that has been mentioned about DL's work. The story centers on the last vampire on Earth who lives in a world which has been overrun by zombies. As the story begins we are immediately introduced to Roman the Vampire. Roman really loathes zombies, almost to the point of pure hatred, because they had basically taken away his food supply. Along the way we meet The Butcher. The Butcher is one nasty dude. I am not going to spoil anything here, but there are some great actions scenes. As we come to the end of the story we learn the meaning of the story's title. Clearly you can see how it ties in with Roses of Blood.

The only thing I felt was missing was an explanation of where the title Roses of Blood on Barbwire Vines comes from. I am sure that DL will tell us in the book.

If you more than one copy of Roses, you will be entered into the raffle more than once, thus increasing your odds of winning the zombie portrait. For example, if you buy two copies, you will be entered twice; three copies, thrice; and so on and so forth. So if you have friends who may be interested, Roses might make a magnificent gift. Or if you want a copy for your collection and one other to read, dog-ear, and crease--well, you can do that too. After all, isn’t a picture of yourself as a zombie worth it? ;)

Roses of Blood tells the harrowing tale of an enclave of vampires breeding human livestock in a post-apocalyptic world overrun with the living dead. But the dead are just now evolving into something far more lethal, something with tentacles--and that's just the beginning!

"Violent and visceral and yet also unexpectedly beautiful and erotic, Snell's debut novel is a nonstop tirade of horrific, nightmare images, a startling vision of the remains of the human race trapped between two of the greatest evils ever to scar the face of the planet. With hordes of deadly zombies on one side and an incredibly powerful army of vampires on the other, mankind's days are numbered."--David Moody, Author of the Autumn series

Everyone who pre-ordered my zombie/vampire novel Roses of Blood on Barbwire Vines was bitten. But the zombie virus could only survive in one lucky individual, which means only one zombie could be produced. Eric J. “feedussnacks” is that individual.

Eric will be zombified by the Roses cover artist, Stephen Blundell. He won the lottery. So welcome, Eric! Congrats!

Oh, and--BRAAAAAAINNNNS!!!
