I'm always going to write the same types of stories and books that I've always written, but I am going to be moving in a couple of new directions -- namely mystery and urban fantasy (fields in which I've also published in the past). I'm not ashamed about being a horror writer -- never was, never will be; what I am, is fed up with those folks (be they readers, editors, reviewers, or publishers) who have such a narrow definition of what *should be* horror that they dismiss or mock anything that strays even a little ways off the well-worn path. Most of my work has never fit into any single category because I cross genres constantly -- you can't create anything worthwhile in a vacuum, and I'm seeing a bit too much of that narrow-mindedness recently that I'm not completely convinced that the field, resurged though it is, can withstand it. I made a joke a year or so back with my editor at Leisure (a great guy named Don D'Auria); Don expressed his conviction that he would do everything in his power to stop the field from falling into the same rut it fell into during the 80s; I said, "You don't have to worry about that; the field won't fall into the same old rut -- it'll create a completely new and different rut to fall into. And the gates will be guarded by zombies." (That's not a snipe against Brian Keene, BTW, so please don't interpret it that way. Brian has arguably single-handedly revived the zombie sub-genre, and more power to him, he deserves the success, he's worked his ass off for it; unfortunately, the success of his work has already began spawning a parade of less imaginative imitators whose work, much to my bemusement, is being gobbled up, pun intended.) Thank you for the kind words about my work. That helps a lot. |
