I like it that you are reviewing books from new authors. Are you cherry picking your postings or will you write a negative review? Personally, I don't think much is gained from a negative review. |

I, or my assistant, review every work that is submitted. When I started The Written Universe, it was, and still is, my intent to give a fair and honest review. If a book isn't good, I'll say so. How else will an author be able to improve on their craft if someone lies and says their work is good when it isn't? I'm not ugly about it, but if there are flaws, I will point them out. If a book is just a mess, and some have been, I'll say so. If you're looking for a new author to discover, aren't you going to be irritated if I turn you on to someone who can't write? One author said they revised their book after my review when they realized I was right - it was too derivative of Star Wars. Another said they were going to have their book proofed again and take out all the annoying use of italics used to indicate a new point of view in the story from that of the main character. I said it was tedious to follow, unnecessary, and hard on the eyes (in this case, this was something no critic should have had to point out - it was really sloppy editing). |

I see. As a reader of reviews I can tell you that I would much rather read a positive review and be influenced toward a purchase rather than read a negative review on a book I've never heard of nor had any intention of purchasing. I don't know your review procedures, but I would think if you had some critical comments to make on a book and you felt that strongly about them, you would tell these novice authors privately, instead of publishing a negative review which becomes a matter of public record. Then maybe I would think you would be doing them a service. That's my two cents, for what it's worth. |
