Post subject:  Another zombie book?

Okay, this is a copy of my recent blog post on Ye Old Myspace page. I;m curious to hear what the good folks here think:

Does the world need another zombie novel? I hope so, but I'm worried about the current glut of them and the fact that I'm writing one right now. Well, not right now. Right now I'm writing this blog post, but you know what I mean. My wife has been asking for a zombie book for years because she loves zombies and anything to do with them. And I've had an idea for one for a long time. But now that I'm actually writing it, there are zombie books everywhere and I'm a little worried that by the time mine is ready to shop around, zombies will be old, rotting news. And to make matters worse, I set out to make this a "no-gimmick" zombie book. There's no twist to make the zombies different or "scarier." They aren't fast, or from outer space, or telepathic or anything weird like that. Very canonical Romero zombies. I'm a bit worried I may finish this book and the world will let out a great big meh. Should I be? Anyone else have any similar worries? Let me know what you think.
And I'm still going to finish the book. I mean, my wife asked for it.

And there it is. What do you guys think?

I feel your pain, as I'm writing a zombie book too. Mine are slow plodders, and they're half from outerspace (it's a nano-machine invasion) I say go for it. Don't worry about gimmicks, either. Give us a good character that we can care about, and that's most of the battle of writing, isn't it?

Meh. It doesn't really matter whether the world needs another zombie novel. There will always be more zombie novels. Why can't one of them be yours?

Need doesn't matter ... what does the world WANT? Speaking for my small corner of it, I say the more zombie books, the better! Bring it on!

In my opinion, good writing trumps all. It might be hard to sell a zombie book to an agent/publisher, but that doesn't mean that you can't write a great book about zombies.

Case in point: I just read two very good zombie novels, both of which are now being made into movies. "Cell" by Stephen King, and "World War Z" by Max Brooks. I'm sure you're probably familiar with them. Both of them had some insider help in getting published. King, is of course, the King, so he can write anything and get published...and Brooks is from a powerful Hollywood family. Both have sold very well. (The book on CD of WWZ is stunning, BTW. If you haven't checked it out, do so.)

The point being: It doesn't really matter what the subject matter is, if you make it interesting. Look at the TV show "Deadliest Catch." I'm frakkin' addicted to the show, which is about crab fishermen. Crab Fishermen. Who'd have ever thought?

Write a novel about zombie crab fisherman. It is your destiny.

Dead Sea is going to be awesome. Have you seen the Delirium cover?

I makes me tingle.

No....

I have seen the leisure cover, and guess what?

MORE GRASPING HANDS!!!!

Every Keene Leisure title, except the worm book, has a grasping hand of some sort.

If the worm had a hand, it would be grasping. It's almost as if that worm yearns to grasp.

Terminal didn't have a grasping hand.

I want a limited edition Keene book with a sculpted latex hand reaching from the cover. That would be keen.

Post subject:

Yes,

but Terminal was Bantam Spectra....I was saying Keene's LEISURE titles.

A agree about the worm though, it looks like it's crying out, lamenting that it has no grasping ability :D :D

Or how about a special edition of GHOUL, as I pop-up book, where the hand grasps oat you every time you open to the title page?

I just logged onto hailsaten and saw the small press cover for Dead Sea, and that cover does look cool. Why do leisure covers more often than not suck, when compared to the small press?
