I hate to say it, but I pretty much do everything except L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poetry, and don't ask me what that is, because it's hard to explain. The super experimental stuff. I write free verse and formal meter, and I've published both. My one book, my unpublished MFA thesis, was a loose novel-in-verse.

I'm writing basically whatever comes into my mind lately, so long is it's somewhat image based. A lot of the horror poetry I've written, which isn't much, I've done in verse. Supposedly, I have a poem that's long been forth coming from The Book of Dark Wisdom, and I've had other poems in Not One of Us and Shantytown Anomaly. Unfortunately, I send work out like once every six months, so I'm not terribly prolific.

That's about it in a nutshell.

If you want to sample the waters of horror poetry, I'd say start with Michael A. Arnzen, though. He writes like an evil, demented william carlos williams. That's a good thing. Lots of really short, intense image based things. here's a shocklines link.

Because of the simplicity of the language, the unrhyming freeverse, I'd say Arnzen, as a horror poet, is probably the most accessible in the genre.

Really the only poetry I have read is Lovecraft's Fungi from Yoggoth. I liked it, I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing in the literary world, but my knowledge of poetry is pretty limited. It seems like it would be much more difficult to write than just straight up fiction. It appears to me, that you would have to have a good feel for how it should sound and be paced to be able to do it right. You being nominated for an award for poetry, obviously must have a very good feel for it.

I used to write horrendous drivel that I called poetry. I once wrote a poem called "Satan Lives in Wilkes Barre." It was sparked by a very Twilight Zone-esque incident I had driving across Pennsylvania back in my college days.

The problem with poetry these days is that Beret wearing dorks are the ones that get the press and stay in the popular imagination. That's the reason why the only way I'll ever go to open mike poetry readings is if somebody drags me by my hair. The other problem with poetry, these days, is that most of it is owned operated and adminsitered by academia. Contemporary poetry is very much a small press / academic press phenomena. The other thing is that they aren't so much open to horror or sci-fi themes.
