Scared

I never really get truely scared by any of them either, but the closest I've come to that would probably be:

Dan Simmons- Summer of Night - There is a scene in this one when one of the kids is going home, thinking it to be a safe place, and from the road he sees this corpse-thing peeking out of his bedroom window. It was so well done it sent a chill down my spine.

Rick Hautala- Night Stone- I don't want to give too much away, but there is a scene in here where a creature is coming at the main character in a tight underground tunnel with no light. The main character has to travel backwards the whole way. Very creepy and well written.

Ramsey Campbell- Incarnate- This book has a lot of creepy things that just seem odd at first, but as time goes on, they seem disturbingly unnatural. I read this book late last year, and I enjoyed reading it. The weird thing is, it has really stuck with me. It seems to be one that I enjoy even more after it has had some time to digest in my mind. At first I would have just said that it was a very good book, but now, several months after finishing it, I think of it as a great one. It's about a prophetic dream study group that somehow starts warping reality. Very cool stuff.

I don't know. I don't think so. Certain movies have scared me. But then again, I know I'm reading a book that's calling for my active imagination...you know, in my head...movies are more of a passive depiction, but seemingly real at some point. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as a kid, scared me more than any book could.

This is such a great question. For me, a couple of novels jump to mind:

THE GIRL NEXT DOOR by Jack Ketchum - So upsetting, and makes one view the whole big bright world around one as something potentially awful and terrifying.

THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS by Ian McEwan - A book that actually gave me NIGHTMARES...and that was years before Paul Schrader's masterful film adaptation of the novel!

COMMUNION by Whitley Strieber - Serious skin-crawling action...all the more so because, whether you think it happened or not, the author clearly believes.

That's what's coming to mind at the moment.
