I honestly don't think that I have ever read a novella. I've read a lot of short stories and a good number of novels, but no novellas. I'm not sure why that is, but it seems that they are much less common than the other two I guess.

Long walk is a novel to me. Though, since a number of bachman books are published in an omnibus, I can see where the confusion. I'm saying this also because I recently read that book, in separate form, and it was over 300 pages.

Matt,
Think of a story collection that only has a small number -- Like Four Past Midnight (stephen king).
For some reason, mass market paperback houses seemed much more willing to do stand alone novellas in decades past then now. Also, now, it's mostly the small niche press, like Cemetary Dance, PS Publishing, etc. that are doing them.

Matt,
if they are published by themselves, and not in a collection, I actually dig novellas a whole lot. It's cheating -- they're a quicker read then a novel, but you can still claim to have "read a book" afterwords. Granted, I don't get that inane sense of satisfaction if I read novella collections.... until the whole book is read.

A couple of these I mentioned in other threads, but since they're all novellas, I might as well put them all together...
Dead in the West by Joe R. Lansdale - Clint Eastwood meets Romero's zombies. Awesome book. Unlike anything I've ever read before. Successfully crosses both genres. Funny, gross, and well-written...so a typical Lansdale piece.
The Crossings by Jack Ketchum - Some people didn't like this, but I thought it was excellent. Very dark western tale about typical cowboys up against witches and ancient Mayan evil. Awesome characters, awesome story.
Weed Species by Jack Ketchum - Horrible. Absolutely horrible. There was no cohesive story...just a vague sequence of violent occurrences by some totally unlikable characters. I can't recommend this at all unless you just like to collect limited edition books for the signatures and artwork.
Blue November Storms by Brian Freeman - I really liked the premise of this, but felt that it was unfinished. I think ditching the sudden ending and adding another 35 pages or so to round it off and actually finish the story would add a lot more to the whole experience. But an otherwise great story.
The Folks by Ray Garton - Holy crap is this book good. I haven't read a lot of Garton, but what I've read, I've loved. This short book blew me away. It's about an obscenely wealthy inbred mountain family. Freaking wild. I think he's writing a sequel to this.
'Nids by Ray Garton - This reads more like a novel, but it's only 135 pages or so, so I guess that qualifies it as a novella. Another one I loved. Brilliant and gross. I hate spiders, so it gave me some serious heebee-jeebies.

Regarding Stephen King's "The Colorado Kid" -- it's not horror. It's not even a conventional mystery or thriller. Other than a novella, I don't what it really is. But for some strange reason, I really enjoyed it. Perhaps it was because I didn't read it, per se, but listened to it as an audio book. It was a creative reading, one that tried to catch the dialect and accent of the two old newspaper guys. It's those characters that kept me glued, the entire time.

I really liked The Colorado Kid, too. I hear a lot of complaints about it, but I think people are just sore for two reasons: it's not typical Stephen King, and {{{SEMI-SPOILER ALERT}}} you never find out who did it (even though he plainly tells you such at the beginning of the book).
Personally, I thought the characters and story were fantastic.

Real quick note on THE COLORADO KID:
Did anyone else think- due to certain surrealistic details in an otherwise naturalistic narrative - that the book (or novella or what-have-you) was a sort of unofficial entry in the DARK TOWER series?
