Most spine-chilling momment in a novel?
I'm almost halfway through The Grin of the Dark but none-other-than, Mr. Ramsey Campbell, and I have just read one of my all time favorite chapters in any novel. The title of the chapter is It Stirs. It takes place with the main character and his elderly parents inside a delapitated, long closed up theater at the dead end of lonely road. The discriptions are wonderful with the white mold growing on the walls, and the old time posters with the faces of the performers scratched off but a grinning mouth full of teeth has been drawn in with a sharpie. It is at night of course so you can only see by flashlight, which inevitably goes out at a bad time. It appears as though someone has broken into the theater before them and fashioned large mounds of snow (it is winter and there is a hole in the roof) into snowmen observers in some of the theater seats and there appears to be more on stage. Or are they something more than just snowmen? The flashlight doesn't allow them to check it out much closer than that. This chapter is very well written and very creepy. I loved it. What are some of the other spin chilling momments in a story or novel that you all out there can think of?
Let's not everyone jump in at once with their most spin chilling momments from novels that they've read. I don't want to overload Horrworlds servers with responses here.
Yeah, I really liked The Ring as well. As far as getting scared by a novel, I don't really get scared, in the fear sense, but rather can recognize a particularly well done, spooky scene that stays with me long after I've read it. I just get a "Man this is super cool," kind of vibe rather than a "I'm going to wet myself," type of thing.

Gosh, while we're on the subject of movies, I saw on Bravo, the other day, a documentary on 30 "more" freaky horror film moments. And they played that scene, from the Davils Rejects, where Otis is joking around with somebody's skinned-off face, only to slap it onto the face of the dead guy's widow (I think).
WTF????
That goes beyond demented. That's just sick.
I haven't seen House of 1000 Corpses or The Devils Rejects. Perhaps I should. I mean I've heard that both are just really, really out there

I saw House of 1000 Corpses, it was okay in a very campy sort of way but I have choose not to watch The Devils rejects because I heard that it is basically about a bunch of sicko's traveling around tortureing and killing people. I'm not to into that sort of film myself.
I think most of the possession scenes from The Exorcist gave me the creeps. The newly-added scene in the re-release of Regan doing the crabwalk down the stairs raised the hair on the back of my neck. That could be the creepiest thing I've ever seen in a movie and I can see why they cut it out of the original release.
I know that a lot of people liked it and I actually have liked the Saw movies, but that is about my limit I think. I have avoided Hostel, because I've heard that it is primarily torture scenes. The Saw movies have had somewhat of a plot going.
One thing I liked about 1000 Corpses & Devil's Rejects was that they were somewhat fresh. They weren't typical, run of the mill American horror releases. They were different.
I liked House of a 1000 Corpses a lot better, but really enjoyed both movies.
