I say that because as a young adult, I loved the old Choose Your Own Adventure type books. The series I liked the best was called Which Way books. They had more of a horror slant to them in general. One of my favorites was titled, Invasion of the Black Slime and Other Tales of Horror. I actually still own it.

I realize that this is probably not what you had in mind, but it was all that I could think of.

In The Oath by Frank Perritti (probably spelled wrong here) some people would have a thick, black ooze start to flow out of there chests if they started to do bad things. Not quite what you're looking for here but it just came to mind and I always kind of liked the idea. The book is pretty good, it even has a dragon in it and it is set in modern times.
