thinking of trying to do some comic book writing for Cemetary Dance's comic, seeing as they're one of the few markets where you don't have to be teamed with an artist, if you want to submit scripts.
So here's my challenge to you comic book / graphic novelist enthusiasts out there. What's some good old school horror work that's readily accessible. I've gone to one or two shops looking for collections of EC Comics stuff, and can't find anything. What are some other titles. I see Marvel has collected Tomb of Dracula. What else is out here that's good. Remember, it's got t o be oldschool styled, so most Vertigo titles is not what I'm looking for.

You should be able to order any of the following from a local bookstore or comic shop, or Amazon, BN.com or Instocktrades.com
From Gemstone:
EC Archives: Weird Science Vol 1
EC Archives: Tales From The Crypt Vol 1
EC Archives: Shock Suspenstories Vol 1
From Marvel:
Essential Horror Vol 1
Essential Man-Thing Vol 1
Essential Monster of Frankenstein Vol 1
Essential Tales of the Zombie
Essential Tomb of Dracula Vols 1-4
Essential Werewolf by Night Vol 1
From DC:
House of Mystery Showcase Vols 1 & 2
Phantom Stranger Showcase Vol 1
It's a bit of a stretch, but there's also:
Essential Dr Strange Vols 1 & 2
Essential Ghost Rider Vol 1
Essential Moon Knight (including early appearances in Werewolf by Night and the B&W Hulk Magazine)
Jonah Hex Showcase
The Haunted Tank Showcase
PS: I'm a writer for ComicMonsters.com, and do a podcast featuring horror comics (see my sig), and I've never seen a Cemetery Dance comic. Are they only available through their web site?
I love the old Werewolf by Night series. I'm sure that it would be a bad model for what Cemetery Dance is looking for though, as it was sort of a superhero/ horror mix. Still a great series though. I checked out their Grave Tales line and even submitted something once (my first ever submission. It didn't make it) and I think they basicly just want a well written, short, horror story that they can put pictures to. I'm not sure the old comics would help you a great deal, as most of them didn't have all that original of stories to them. I do remember Marvels Tower of Shadows had some pretty good stories to the ones that I had, but I only have two of them, so it's hard to tell if the whole series played out that way.

They themselves said "old school" horror feel. I was just taking that as the old EC books, ones that I can't seem to find on the graphic novel shelf as a collection. There's a probably a reason that my out of date, not collecting in years butt doesn't know about.
I have some resources on writing for comics, which -- like poetry -- is amazingly based on resonate imagery. I'm just of the school of the thought that believes you should read a lot of what you're trying to write. Most of my collecting, years ago, were Image superheroes. Different medium, and I guess I just wanted to check out the vibe of the old stuff. Vertigo tends to be a little nuanced, but that's more likely due to the influences of Gaiman, Morrison, Moore, Ennis, and others.
Thanks for the comments, all.
Much appreciated.

Tomb of Dracula vol. 4 was on the shelf at the local B & N today. I didn't get it, partly due to my comic book fear that I should always start reading with Vol. 1. Pretty Silly, I know.

You should be able to grab some of Warren's old black and white magazines off eBay fairly inexpensively --Eerie and Creepy particularly. Good stuff. Short horror stories, like updated EC.
I just noticed there are some Cthulhu comics on the shelf nowadays. I bought a trade paperback of a few stories the other day. Haven't gotten a chance to read it yet though.
In our 7th podcast we discuss Adam Warren's lost Kill Bill comic, Eddie Campbell's upcoming Black Diamond Detective Agency from First Second Books and the upcoming Girls and Corpses Magazine & Girls and Corpses TV.
We also discuss the return of Creepy & Eerie to screens big and small, the bi-monthy return of the Tales from the Crypt comic book, the controversy surrounding the new Hostel 2 movie posters, and the uncut trailer for Frank Miller's 300 (links to all in the show notes).
We close out this episode with a discussion of the first 3 issues of Kade from Arcana Studios in another installment of Head2Head.
Not merely an interview (though there's that too), this is the first in a series of 'Direktor's Kuts', in the style of a Director's commentary track on a DVD, where we go page-by-page with the creators and discuss the thought processes behind each scene, how it was rendered and how it relates to future issues.
In this episode, Josh Finney and Kat Rocha join us in a discussion of:
religion, heroin, 3D computer modeling, Fritz Lang's 'M', Eminem, the Kundalini Serpent, scaring the neighbors with realistic looking prop guns, John Lennon, Philip K. Dick, Snoop Dogg, Sin City, Skinny Puppy, RNA, Stanley Kubrick's The Killing, Douglas Rushkoff, Knight Rider 2000, digital painting, William Gaines, Japanese Billboards, Simon Bisley, Nightmare on Elm St., Charles & Marilyn Manson, 2000 A.D., record labels, how the pages are created, the difference between the San Diego version and the Direct Market version, Kat's boobs, and how it all relates to Utopiates #1.
That's right. Kat's boobs. Seriously.
So break out your Utopiates #1 (or buy, borrow, but please don't steal one), and join us on an entertaining behind-the-scenes look at a comic with much more beneath the surface than you might expect.
We've spoken to a lot of other creators and publishers, and they've all been very excited about taking this trip with us. We look forward to your feedback, and what other comics you'd like Direktor's Kuts for (keeping in mind our show's typical genre coverage).

Just listened the other day. I'm enjoying your podcast. I was wondering if you guys would ever consider taking a look back at the old Witching Hour, Ghosts, Secrets of Sinister House, etc. comics from the past. Sort of a retrospective type of thing?
"Mignola feels that Hellboy: Blood & Iron (the second animated film) has the feel of a Hammer Studios horror film, and Hellboy: The Phantom Claw (the anticipated third animated film) looks like it'll have the feel of a Universal Studios horror film."
I saw the first one when it debuted on Cartoon Network back around Halloween. I caught part of the second one when it premiered a couple of weeks back. Now that I have the DVD of the first, I'm looking forward to watching it with my wife. She loved the live-action movie.
