Well crap...I didn't realize I was going to have to read the Dark Tower of blogs to get to the soap opera! Wow. Yeah, all a bit melodramatic. Man, Brian Keene really allows himself to get riled up, doesn't he?

As for everyone else over there, shit, what a zoo. It's interesting (from the POV of a complete nobody like me) to see all the authors and publishers jump in the ring; although, it seems like Kealan Patrick Burke and Larry Roberts from Blodletting Press seemed to be the only ones who really "got" what Keene was saying.

Sure was an awful lot of mental masturbation and ego stroking from the general masses, though. I get a kick out of these half-famous people and complete nobodies acting like experts.

For what it's worth, it was this kind of overall atmosphere that kept me from hanging out at TODP. Too much effort to sift through the nonsense in order to find the discussions worth joining.

Hey Rich, I was wondering where you were at. I certainly don't think your a jerk, but I understand you feelings. I only started posting anywhere (yog-radio) late last year (like September 06 I think), so I don't know a lot about it either. I'm at the point now, where this is really the only forum I check every day. I look at how much I've posted and kind of wonder if I'm getting on everyones nerves or not. This place feels like home though. When I first started posting here I read Mr. Wilbanks saying that if you weren't careful, these things could start to take over your life. I probabley should have listened to him, now it seems to be too late.

Yes, Matt. You pegged it exactly. Newbie paranoia...am I getting on everybody's nerves? I feel that sometimes, and that's when I stop posting. Like, sometimes, I have no probably posting opinions to my own blog, because I kind-of suspect that only 4 people read it (that I know of). Nobody is going to get as mad at me, per se, if I post 1000 long winded words about something if it's on my own space. But then again, it's all relative. I do agree, though, that this particular board is like a second cyberhome. Or, if Damned Critic is my cyber lair, then this is definitely the cool neighbor's house, the one that also feels like home (think Seinfeld's appartment).

Sheesh. I just said Justice and Wilbanks's message board is Seinfeld's apartment. I need to get back to writing my western...

I have to say, for myself, the Rhysling nomination was a big deal to me. So I don't publish a huge stack of poetry often, but I guess it's the one thing lately that validates what he have spent years learning to do, and remaining shit ass poor because of it. The other, recently, is when you start getting the respect of writers who have made it.

To me, the real difference is this. There are writers and there are professionals. All that separates us is our level of experience. A professional writer, however, is something completely different.

Which brings me to Mark's point. Technically, and realistically too, Mark is a much more professionally accomplished writer than I am. Sure, I can talk a good game, but he's got the books on his resume. I don't. Sure, I've published everything from gaglines on lighters ("I light farts" once earned me 100$, I kid you not) to poems, to a lot of essays to a few non-genre short stories, and finally one short-short play. Mark's got the books. But, herein's my point. All of us want to pay our dues. That makes us sincere. I think that's different the the iUniverse types who theink their self published rhymes deserve National Book Awards (which is why I, never, ever, go to poetry slams or open mike readings. They are painful experiences).
